CURRENTS

Currents is a five day short course aimed at introducing ESEA adult immigrants to devised theatre making, culminating in a short piece of filmed performance.

Currents is here to give you a voice. By melding analogue and digital interaction, Currents will create an unplugged environment for you to tell stories that matter to you, and create a piece of media on the last day for you to keep or to share with the world.

You can add this to your portfolio of performance, to use as part of your showreel, or simply to keep. With the rising population of East Asians in London and the UK more generally, there aren’t enough programmes to keep up and reflect these numbers in our cultural representation. The ambition of this piece of recorded media is to take a small step forward in improving the visual representation of ESEA immigrants in UK media.

SOME FEEDBACK FROM OUR PREVIOUS WORKSHOPS

“It was beautiful to experience the workshops as part of a community, seeing people grow in confidence and connecting over common stories.”

“I have managed to broaden a space to express myself, to develop my arts practice, all while feeling that I am doing this with people I hope to stay in touch with.”

“Going from basics concepts to a complex performance was incredible. That process of devising as a group together got faster, better and more succinct, we were able to do 5 minute prompts after just 2 days together.”

YOUR DIRECTOR

Yuxuan Liu is a theatre director, actor-musician, and producer whose work focuses on queer new writing, devised theatre, and new musicals. He has taught playwriting, devising, creative producing, and physical theatre workshops and programmes at organisations including artsdepot, Cardboard Citizens, Croydon Youth Theatre Organisation, the Kiln Theatre, and the Space. Yuxuan’s theatre credits include the Olivier-nominated Dragons and Mythical Beasts(International Tour), Wildfire Roads (artsdepot), COMPLEX (Response Ability Theatre), Lipstick doesn’t make you pretty. (Baron’s Court Theatre), BoyBi (the Turbine Theatre, the Bread & Roses Theatre), and Caligula and the Sea (the Vaults). Yuxuan is currently a resident artist and facilitator at artsdepot.

This programme intends to give voice to a marginalised community, and supply provision to what is an under-served community in theatre. It is designed to introduce new means of cultural expression to those who have little to no experience in theatre.
